Güvercin Yeri Notebook
When buying a bird, we all wonder the same thing: what has it flown itself, what did its dam and sire achieve, have any of its siblings scored results? Reading what is written on the pedigree is nice, but we also want to see how that information is reflected in race results. That was one of our starting points when building Güvercin Yeri. Another was helping lost birds return to their lofts; building a bridge that brings the finder and the owner together.
In this section we share what we come across while working with birds, races and pedigree records. Sometimes we will read a race result together, sometimes we will talk about how a single wrong digit on a ring led us to another bird. We will make room for both our own observations and the experiences you send us. If there is a topic you think "you should look at this too", write; let's look at it together.
Pedigree analysis with race data: reading a pedigree through real results
Linking every bird on a pedigree to its real race records by ring number; performance of the central bird, siblings, offspring and line; the difference between a document note and a proven result.
About 8 min readWhat is a One Loft Race (OLR) and how does it work?
How one loft races work: delivery of youngsters, shared care, training, hotspot and final races, and how to read the results.
About 7 min readRace day: liberation, the homing window and late birds
How the liberation time shifts with weather and humidity, when the first birds should be expected, mass arrivals, overnighting and smashed races.
About 8 min readDew point: the race weather that temperature alone does not reveal
What the dew point is, why a pigeon struggles to shed body heat in humid air, practical dew point ranges and assessing the weather along the race route.
About 8 min readHow is race velocity (m/min) calculated and why does it vary so much?
The metres-per-minute velocity formula, a worked example, normal and fast race ranges, the effect of wind and the limits of comparing velocities between races.
About 7 min readHow to interpret a race result: position, entries and field position
Reading a position together with the number of entries, distance and race type; looking at a bird's series of results rather than a single race.
About 7 min readHow to read a ring number: country code, year and serial
The general structure of racing pigeon rings, different formats by country, common reading mistakes and the right way to search.
About 6 min readWhy should the ring number be a global identity?
Writing the ring the same way everywhere as birds move between countries and organisations; country codes, equivalent codes, zeros, rings changed afterwards and the single identity principle.
About 7 min readHow to use Güvercin Yeri: search, live races and record corrections
Searching for birds by ring number, what the information on a bird page means, the live race centre, loft and pedigree tools, and reporting incorrect records.
About 6 min readHow do we read pedigrees and race results together?
Assessing ring identity, lineage lines, repeated ancestors, missing boxes and placings together with participation.
